Customs Duties and Taxes

In Japan, there is no "nota fiscal" (tax invoice) like in Brazil. The document issued is called an Invoice, which merely describes the product and its value, and it is this document that the Brazilian Federal Revenue uses for inspection purposes.

Customs duties and taxes are levied on imported goods, such as the Import Tax (II), which can be up to 60% of the value of the goods + freight + insurance; the ICMS, which varies according to the destination state; and other contributions such as PIS and COFINS Importation.

Responsibility: YOU, as the importer, are legally responsible for the due customs and tax charges, as well as other payments and fees related to postal services and the transport of goods across international borders.

Main fees and taxes

Import Tax (II): Varies from 0% to 60%, depending on the product and the tax regime. For purchases below US$50, the rate is 20%.

ICMS (Tax on the Circulation of Goods and Services): This is a state tax that varies between 17% and 25%, depending on the destination state of the goods.

PIS and COFINS Importation: These are federal contributions on the value of the product.

How it works

Customs fees are calculated on the customs value of the merchandise, which includes the product price, freight, and insurance.

The rules and tax values vary according to the type of product and the destination state in Brazil.

Inspection is random, but more targeted items include electronics, perfumes, and brand-name clothing. Describing the order generically can attract the attention of inspectors.

How to know if you've been taxed

Follow the entire process through the Correios website or tracking applications using your tracking code that you receive in your email.

The tax notification is usually sent by email or SMS and will be available in the Federal Revenue system.

The payment deadline is up to 20 calendar days after notification. Paying earlier speeds up the release of the merchandise.

The responsibility for paying these fees, as well as for monitoring, tracking, and meeting shipment deadlines (30 days within the Brazilian postal service website), rests entirely with the customer.

Caixa do Japão is not responsible for decisions made by the Federal Revenue, retentions, taxation, or returns of orders. Complaints should be made directly to the competent authorities (e.g., Correios ID Portal).
